QuestionAnswer
Label the 3 main climate zones on a map Polar, Temperate, Tropical
How is water ranked in density cold denser than warm, salty denser than fresh
What three conditions of the atmosphere must be discussed when describing weather conditions Temperature, Precipitation, and wind
What are the other differences between climate and weather Climate is much more long term than weather is
Explain how the curvature of the earth influences climate Uneven heating of the earth leads to warmer temps at the equator, colder at the poles
What are the three main climate zones and how are they related to latitudinal banding? Tropical, Temperate, and Polar… uneven heating creates these “bands” or zones of climate based on latitude.
Explain how local conditions like mountain ranges can influence climate by creating rainshadow desserts. Bodies of Water, Elevation, Terrain (Mountains) influence climate. Air that hits a mountain has to rise over it. As the air rises, the moisture condenses/precipitates, leaving very dry air and a desert on the other side of the mountain.
How are air temperature, pressure, and wind related? Warm air = less dense/low pressure Cold air = more dense/high pressure Wind = the movement of air from high pressure to low pressure.
What is the Coriolis effect? Deflection of wind due to the spinning of the earth… this is why global winds are curved/not in the exact same direction across latitude.
Arrange the following in order of LEAST to MOST dense Room temperature fresh water, 2 warm freshwater, 1 cold salty water, 4 room temperature salty water 3
How are the ocean currents and the uneven heating of the earth connected? Ocean currents redistribute heat around the earth. Different parts of the ocean are hit with different amounts of sunlight, and that difference is cycled all over the oceans.
Name two other reasons why ocean currents are so important to life on earth other than affecting climate. Transportation, carries nutrients, different temperature water makes different habitats
How does the Cold California current coming from Alaska effect the climate of California? Wind blowing over the cold Alaskan waters makes the nearby land cooler.
Your friend who lives in Florida says that climate change is real because it has already snowed in Florida twice this year, what would you say to them? Climate is very long term. Two weather events does not mean the climate is shifting.
