What is FDA? Food and Drug Administration
what is the FDA Purpose? to make sure that all medication that are on the market go through an intense review before allowing the medication out to the public.
What is USP? United States Pharmacopia. Set standards for prescription, non-prescription meds in order to order to improve the health of the public through these standard.
What are the standards? Legal Control of Drugs, Food and Drug Act 1906, The Federal Food, Drug, and cosmetic Act of 1938, The Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act 1970
What is a chemical name? actual chemical composition of the med.
what is Brand name? Is the Trade name which is registered to manufacturer and protect by trademark. No one but the manufacturer can use this name
What is generic name? Name not protected by trademark; same in all country ( also not capitalized )
What is the Offical name? name given by the FDA & the first letter is capitalized. Can be similar to the brand/trade name. Used in the USP.
What 4 things you must know? 1-where to look/find info. about the med. 2-calculate dosage accurately consistently 3-know the six rights of med. admin. 4-know the nursing implications
What is your responsibility? To obtain an order or perscription written form the physician/qualified professional first to admin. with out harm giving it safetly.
What is the purpose of Health Care Institution? Est. individual policies to meet federal, state & local regulation **** Primary concerns are to preventing health problems that may result from med. admin.
What is the medication orders? needs to list the drug and direction on how to give it.
Written order Medical Records( physician order), order book, legal prescription pad, transmit to pharmacy by computer
Rules to phone order Done when written or electronic is not avail.,record immediatley, Repeat to physician, Make sure all components are present, Clarify any similar drugs, Repeat or spell any clarification needed, use T.O. in documentation, cosign after the physician's name
What is on a Medication order? Patient name, Date and time the order is written, Drug name, Dosage, Route, Frequency, signature of the person ordering ( any special instruction on med)
What is MAR & do you document? Medication Administration Record; signature of the nurse admin. med., initial of the nurse, nurse title * MAR must be compared to the physician's order in order verify med. is correct on the MAR
What do you do if there is a medication error? Check the patient , report the incident to charge nurse and presciber as soon as possible, follow facility procedure, THIS COULD CAUSE HARM OR EVEN DEATH
