What is a covalent bond? -Two or more atoms sharing electrons -Two electrons per bond -Non+non
What is dissociation? -The breaking apart of two water ions of opposite charge
What is an acid? -A compound that as an H in front of the equation.
How does the ratio of H+ & OH- affect the substance? -More H+ its acidic -More OH- its basic.
What is a base? -A compound that has an OH in the back of the equation.
What does ph stand for? -The power of hydrogen
Whats the definition of energy? -The ability to do work.
What is potential energy? -Stored energy.
What is kinetic energy? -Energy in motion.
What is chemical energy? -Potential energy in a chemical bond.
What is activation energy? -Small amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction.
What is an example of a physical change? -Melting of ice.
What is a physical change? -Its a change in the physical state of the substance.
Is a physical reaction permanent? -No
What is a chemical change? -The process where one substance is changed into an entirely new substance.
What is an endothermic reaction? -Energy is absorbed by the reaction.
During and endothermic reaction, what happens to the temperature? -It goes down.
What is an exothermic reaction? -Energy is released during the reaction.
What are organic molecules? -Made by a living thing
What elements make up Organic molecules? -C,H
What does the Structural formula show? -The Bonding arrangement
In a structural formula, where would the carbon sit if the substance is organic? -The middle
What are the four organic molecule types? -Lipids -Carbohydrates(sugar) -Protein -Nucleic acid(DNA)
What is the ratio of atoms in Carbohydrates? -1:2:1
What elements make up carbohydrates? -C,H,O
Why does our body need carbohydrates(Sugar)? -Energy
How are carbohydrates classified? -By there degree of complexity.
Whats a monosaccharide? -A simple sugar
What is an example of a monosaccharide? -Glucose
About how many atoms are there per monosaccharide structure? -3 to 7
Whats a disaccharide? -Two monosaccharides bonded together.
What is Dehydration synthesis? -Its the process where two monosaccharides are combined.
Is water gained or lost during dehydration synthesis? -One water is lost
What is hydrolysis? -One water is added to a large sugar to break the bond.
What us hydrolysis the opposite of? -Dehydration synthesis.
What is a polysaccharide? -long chains of bonded monosaccharides.
What is starch? -Temporary food storage in a plant.
What is Glycogen? -Temporary food storage in the liver.
What kind of bond does starch have? -Alpha
Can we humans break down an Alpha bond? -Yes
Can we humans break up a beta bond? -No
What is Cellulose? -Cell wall in plants that are used for structure.
What two bonds does cellulose have? -Alpha and Beta
What type of bond does starch have? -Alpha
What type of bond does Glycogen have? -Alpha
What is a lipid? -Fat oils that do not dissolve in water.
What elements make up lipids? -H,C,O
How does lipids appear on animals? -As fat
How does lipids appear on plants? -As oil
What are the two types of fatty acids? -Saturated and Unsaturated.
Why can't the human body break down Saturated fatty acids? -Because the H prevents the carbon chain from being digested.
Do saturated fatty acids have single bonds or double? -Single
Can Unsaturated fats be easily digested? -Yeah, it has double bonds.
What elements make up organic protein molecules? -C,H,O,N
What are organic Proteins made from? -Amino Acid
