QuestionAnswer
a book is sliding across a table and slowing down. what statement best describes the forces acting on it? an unbalanced force (friction) is acting opposite the motion.
what is an example of a vertical force? gravity pulling a ball downward
what is an example of a non - contact force? gravity
what is the net force when tow people pull on a rope in opposite directions with equal strength? 0 N
an object will keep moving at the same speed and direction unless acted on by an unbalanced force. This describes: inertia
how do the action and reaction forces affect each other? they affect each other by using each others differences to power them up.
describe what action and reaction mean in your own words if there is a force, there is something that happens.
what is the main difference between a balanced force and an unbalanced force? balanced forces stay still, unbalanced forces move.
why does a balanced object stay still (think of the forces acting on it) because the forces are equal
why does an unbalanced object move? (think of the forces acting on it) because the forces are not equal
describe why objects stay at rest or keep moving unless acted on by a force? (1st law of motion-inertia) when an object is at rest the forces are equal, when an object is moving they are not equal.
what force am i? I am invisible but constant. without me, you'd never feel your weight or see an apple falling from a tree. gravity
what force am I? I quietly fight every movement, from sliding socks on the floor to cars stopping at a red light. without me, control would be impossible. friction
what force am I? you can't see me, but I can pull and push metal objects without touching them. my strength depends on how close I am. magnetism
what force am I? I don't act on my own; you must start me! when you push, pull, or throw something. I'm the force that gets it moving. applied force
what force am I? I'm the quiet support that keeps everything in place. I push up while another force pulls down, balancing objects that rest on me. normal force
what force a I? I work against motion every time you try to move something heavy across the floor, but I also keep you from slipping when you walk. Who am I? friction

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
