QuestionAnswer
Mean Distance The average distance between a planet and the sun.
Period of Revolution The time it takes a planet to revolve or orbit around the sun (go around sun).
Period of Rotation The time it takes a planet to complete one spin on its axis.
Eccentricity of Orbit Describes the shape of the orbit (path of a planet around the sun). The higher the number the more oval (eccentric) the orbit.
Equatorial Diameter Explains the size of the planet by measuring the equatorial diameter.
Mass The amount of matter found within a planet.
Density The amount of matter within an occupied space.
Terrestrial Planets Planets-Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars (The first four planets/inner planets) Characteristics: Rocky/earthlike Very dense Small in size
Jovian Planets Planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune (Outer planets) Characteristics: * Gaseous * Very large (equatorial diameter) * Low density * More massive
Asteroid Belt The asteroid belt is located between Mars and Jupiter. This belt separates the Terrestrial and Jovian planets.
Mercury Terrestrial planet Smallest Fastest period of revolution No atmosphere
Venus Terrestrial Planet Hottest planet due to runaway greenhouse effect. Toxic atmosphere
Earth Terrestrial Planet Only planet that has liquid water. Most dense planet
Mars Terrestrial Planet Called the Red Planet (metal within soil has rusted/oxidized).
Asteroid Belt Found between Mars and Jupiter. The asteroid belt separates Terrestrial and Jovian planets.
Jupiter Jovian Planet Largest planet Fastest period of rotation which creates hurricane type winds on planet.
Saturn Jovian Planet 2nd largest planet. Least dense planet.
Uranus Jovian Planet 3rd largest planet Rotates on its side like a bowling bowl.
Neptune Jovian Planet 4 largest planet Takes 164.8 years to revolves around the sun.
Dwarf Planets Pluto Eris Ceres
Comet * Known as a dirty snowball. * Made of dust particles trapped in a mixture of frozen water, carbon dioxide, methane and ammonia.
Asteroid Huge, solid, rocklike masses Leftover material from the solar system's formation.
Meteoroids Meteoroids (celestial object) are different than asteroids because they are smaller in size.
bolide? Impact Crater: As a bolide strikes the earth it leaves a crater behind.
Kuiper Belt The Kuiper Belt is a disk-shaped region of icy bodies located beyond the orbit of Neptune.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
