Atmosphere the layer of gases surrounding a planet The layer of gases surrounding a planet
Biosphere All parts of Earth where life occurs, including those on the surface, in the atmosphere, and in the hydrosphere; all of Earth’s ecosystems
Exosphere The highest, largest, and least dense layer of Earth’s atmosphere, serving as the boundary between Earth and space
Geosphere The solid portion of Earth, including the solid crust and the solid and molten rock found in Earth’s interior
Hydrosphere All the water on or surrounding Earth
Mesosphere The third layer of the atmosphere above Earth’s surface; the coldest layer where most meteors burn up
Stratosphere The second layer of the atmosphere above Earth’s surface; where the ozone layer, which helps protect life on Earth by absorbing harmful UV radiation, is located; a very stable layer with little turbulence
Thermosphere The fourth layer of the atmosphere above Earth’s surface; the second largest layer, it has the greatest temperature range and low air density; where the International Space Station orbits
Troposphere The lowest and densest layer of Earth’s atmosphere; contains about 75% of all air and is where most weather phenomena occur
