phylum second broadest classification level consisting of five divisions

family fifth level of classification
genus sixth level of classification; typically the first part of the scientific name for the organism
species lowest level of classification; second part of the scientific name for an organism
animalia many-celled organisms that must find food
monera major division of single-celled organisms consisting of two second-level subdivisions
protista major division consisting mostly of single-celled organisms that have some mode of locomotion
fungi single or many-celled organism that absorbs food
plantae many-celled organisms that have cellulose
sac creates spores in an ascus
club creates spores in a basidia
sporangium creates spores in a sporangia
bacteria single-celled organisms, mostly absorb food
cyanobacteria single-celled organisms that make their own food
nonvascular plants that absorb water without the help of roots, stems, or leaves
vascular plants that use a tube-like structure to move water with nutrients to all parts of the plant
chlorophyta single or multi-celled plants that reproduce by forming zygospores; commonly called green algae
phaeophyta many-celled brown plants, mostly living in salt water (brown algae)
rhodophyta many-celled red plants, mostly living in deep salt water (red algae)
bryophyta many-celled green plants that make their own food, living in moist areas on land; reproduction from spores in capsules (mosses and liverworts)
horsetails simple vascular plants that reproduce by forming spores in sporangia
club mosses simple vascular plants that reproduce by forming spores in sporangia
ferns vascular plants that have feathery leaves; reproduction by forming spores in sporangia
angiosperms flowering plants that produce seeds inside a fruit
gymnosperms plants that produce seeds outside of a fruit
proifera animals known as sponges
coelenterata animals with a central cavity with a mouth; most with tentacles, some with attach
mollusca animals that have soft bodies with hard coverings
playthelminthes flatworms
nemotoda roundworms
annelida segmented worms
echinodermata animals with radial symmetry and a tough outer covering with spines
arthropoda animals with jointed limbs; most with a hard, plated body covering
chordata animals with internal skeletons made of bones or cartilage
