mesosphere the third layer of the atmosphere above Earth's surface; the coldest layer where most meteors burn up
stratosphere the second layer of the atmosphere above Earths' surface; where the ozone layer, which helps protect life on Earth by absorbing harmful UV radiation, is located; a very stable layer with little turbulence
thermosphere the fourth layer of the atmosphere above Earth's surface; the second largest layer, it has the greatest temperature range and low air density; where the International Space Station orbits
troposphere the lowest and densest layer of Earth's atmosphere; contains about 75% of all air and is where most weather phenomenon occurs
