Chapter 3 Plants

Stomata Small opening on the underside of a leaf through which oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide can move
Transpiration The process by which water is lost through a plants leaves
Germination The sprouting of the embryo
Respiration 1. The action or process of inhaling and exhaling; breathing. 2. An act of inhaling and exhaling; a breath. 3. The action or process by which an organism without lungs, such as a fish or plant, exchanges gases with its environment.
Flower The reproductive structure of an angiosperm
Pollination The transfer of pollen from male reproductive structures to female reproductive structures in plants
The three functions of roots They anchor a plant in the ground, absorb water and minerals from the soil, and sometimes store food
The two functions of stems It carries substances between the plant‘s roots and leaves. The stem also provides support for the plant and holds up the leaves so they are exposed to the sun.
The basic function of leaves Leaves capture the sun‘s energy and carry out the food – making process of photosynthesis
What is the difference between photosynthesis and cellular respiration? Photosynthesis stores energy, and cellular respiration releases it
The three ways a seed can be dispersed When animals eat, the seeds inside the fruit pass through the animals digestive system and are deposited in new areas. Other seeds are enclosed in barb-like structures that hook onto fur or clothing. Some are taken by the wind.
Label the basic parts of a flower See diagram note sheet. (Sepals, petals, stamens, and pistils.)
What does each part of the flower do Sepals protect the growing flower and are often green in color. Pedals are generally the most colorful parts of the flower. The stamens are the male reproducing parts. The pistols are found in the center of flowers. They have sticky tips.
