Cell Processes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Diffusion | Movement of molecules from an area of high to low concentration. |
| Osmosis | Diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane |
| Active Transport | Movement of materials through a membrane that uses energy |
| Passive Transport | Movement of materials through a membrane that does NOT use energy |
| Endocytosis | the movement of a large molecule INTO a cell |
| Exocytosis | the movement of a large molecule OUT of a cell |
| Equilibrium | The molecules of a substance are spread out evenly - no areas of high or low concentration |
| Selective Permeability | When a membrane allows some molecules to pass through while keeping others out |
| Photosynthesis | A chemical process used by producers (autotrophs) to change light energy, carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and sugar. |
| Cellular Respiration | Process that changes sugar and oxygen into carbon dioxide, water and energy |
| PRODUCTS of photosynthesis | glucose (sugar) and oxygen |
| REACTANTS of photosynthesis | carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight |
| PRODUCTS of cellular respiration | carbon dioxide, water, and energy |
| REACTANTS of cellular respiration | glucose (sugar) and oxygen |
| Chlorophyll | A green pigment found in plants cells that absorbs light energy and is used to carry out photosynthesis |
| Examples of ACTIVE Transport | Endocytosis and Exocytosis |
| Examples of PASSIVE Transport | Diffusion and Osmosis |
