Energies (Acosta)

Types of Energy

Question
What is known as the ability to do work or cause a change? Energy
What is known as energy in motion and energy stored? Mechanical Energy
What is known as energy in motion to an object? Kinetic Energy
What is energy that is not causing any changes? Potential Energy
What are the two types of potential energies that are known as stored energy and may cause changes later? Gravitational Energy & Elastic Energy
What type of potential energy depends on the Earth’s gravity like a person falling or a car rolling down a hill? Gravitational Energy
What type of potential energy is created from a bent or stretched object like a pole that will bend or a rubber band stretching out? Elastic Energy
In sound energy, what is known as the back-and-forth motion of an object? Vibrations
What kind of energy moves through the air as sound waves? Sound Energy
How fast does sound energy travel in the air? 330 meters per second
What is known as energy that is all around us and it can reflect, bend, or pass through objects? Light
What are the three types of light capabilities on materials? Transparent, Translucent, & Opaque
What does transparent mean in light? It means light can pass through an object
What does translucent mean in light? It means light can’t completely go through certain objects
What does opaque mean in light? It means that light can’t pass through any of these objects.
In what direction does light move in? In a straight line
What is known when light reflects or bounces off a object? Reflection
What is known when light bends into new material in an angle different from 90 degrees? Refraction
Light waves can have very long or very short wavelengths, what is it known as? Electromagnetic Spectrum
What is the speed of light? 186,000 Miles Per Second
Atoms are what to all matter in the universe? Building Blocks
What are the three parts to an atom? Protons, Electrons, & Neutrals
What parts of the atoms have the positive, negative, and neutral part of the atom? Protons= + positive + part of an atom, Electrons= - negative- part of an atom, & Neutrals= no charge part of an atom.
What parts of an atom balances its structure? The Positive (+) and Negative (-) charges balance the structure of an atom
When positive and negative charges of an object don’t balance, the object is charged and develops? Static Electricity
Moving charges from an atom produced into electrical energy is found in 3 areas, what are they? Sound, Light, and Heat Energy
Energy cannot be what into another form? Made or destroyed, but changed or transformed
Electrical energy is used to make light bulbs work by changing into what? Light Energy
What other form of energy is electrical energy changed into? Energy of motion
Where do many electric devices get their power from? Electrical Outlets
Electrical energy travels through power lines into what areas in towns or cities? Homes, Schools, & Businesses
A material through which an electric charge can move easily is called what? Conductor
What are some of the best conductors are made of? Copper, Gold, Silver, and Aluminum
What are materials that prevent the flow of electric charge known as? Resistor
What are strong resistors that can stop most electric currents to place or areas in towns or cities? Insulators
Insulators are mainly made of materials, what are they? Rubber, Plastic, Glass, or Dry cotton

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
