Chapter 3 plants

Lesson 3

TermDefinition
Stomata Is a small opening on the underside of a leaf through which oxygen ,water, and carbon dioxide can move [plural: Stomata].
Transpiration Is the process by which water is lost through a plant leaves.
Germination Is the sprouting of the embryo out of a seed; occurs when the embryo resumes that growth following dormancy.
respiration is the process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen.
flower the reproductive structure of an angiosperm.
Pollination is the transfer of pollen from male reproductive structures to female reproductive structures in plants.
List the 3 functions of roots Roots anchor a plant in the ground, absorb water, and minerals from the soil, and sometimes store food.
List the 2 functions of stems the stems carries substances between the plant’s roots and leaves . The stem also provides support for the plant and holds up the leaves so they are exposed to the sun.
Describe the basic function of leaves. Leaves capture the sun’s energy and carry out the food- making process of photosynthesis.
What is the difference between photosynthesis and cellular respiration? Respiration releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants and other autotrophs capture and use light energy to make food from carbon dioxide and water.
List the 3 ways a seed can be dispersed. 1. animals eat food, the seeds pass through their jet digestive system and are deposited and new areas. 2. other seeds are enclosed in barb like structures that hook onto fur or clothing. 3. water also disperses seeds, into oceans and rivers.
Describe with each part of the flower does. Pistol is found in the center part of the flower. The stamens are the male reproductive parts. Pedals are the most colorful part of the flower. Sepals protect the flower . Ovary protects the seed as they develop.
Label the basic parts of the flower (see diagram note sheet) Stamen, pistol, pedal Sepal, stem, filament, stigma ,style, ovary.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
