Chapter 3 plants
lesson 3
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Stomata | small opening on the underside of a leaf through which water, carbon dioxide, and oxygen can move |
| transpiration | The process by which water is lost through a plants leafs |
| germination | The sprouting of the embryo out of a seed; odors when the embryo resumes its growth following dormancy |
| respiration | The process in which Cells use oxygen and digest food molecules to release the energy in food |
| Flower | The reproductive structure of an angiosperm |
| pollination | The transfer of pollen from male reproductive structures to female reproductive structures in plants |
| the 3 functions of roots | Roots anchor a plant in the ground, absorb water and minerals from the soil and sometimes store food |
| 2 functions of stems | The sun carries substances between the plants roots and leaves. The stem also provides support for the plant and hold up the leaves, so they are exposed to the sun. |
| the basic functions of leaves | Leaves capture the sun’s energy and carry out the food, making process of photosynthesis |
| the difference between photosynthesis and cellular respiration | Photosynthesis uses light energy, carbon dioxide and water to create glucose and oxygen. While cellular respiration uses glucose and oxygen to create a APT (energy) water and carbon dioxide |
| List the 3 ways a seed can be dispersed | When animals digest fruit in other places. Water can carry seeds. Some plants eject their seeds. |
| label the basic parts of a flower | See diagram notes sheet! Atypical flower contains pedals, stamens, and pistils |
| What each part of the flower does pt 1 | Leaves capture the sun‘s energy and carry out the food, making process of photosynthesis. The stem carry substances between the plants roots and leaves. The stem also provides support for the plant and holds up the leaves so they are exposed to the sun. |
| What each part of the flower does pt 2 | Roots anchor a plant in the ground absorb water and minerals from the soil and sometimes store food. |
