vegetative propagation in plants

TermDefinition
Tuber An underground stem that stores food. Ex. Potato
Corm A swollen, vertical stem with a papery coating. Eg. Gladiolus and Crocus
Tunicate bulbs A papery, outer covering called a tunic. A compressed, modified stem with nodes, called a basal plate. Fleshy scales made of modified leaf tissue.
Scaly bulbs Lack a paper covering (tunic). Have a basal plate. Have fleshy scales made of leaf tissue
Rhizomes are underground stems, horizontally growing, produce shoots and adventitious roots. Ginger grows large _______ called pachymorphs
Stolons Are above-ground stems, grow horizontally, produce shoots and adventitious roots. eg. Strawberry and spider plants
Runner The basal internodes of the bud elongate horizontally and trail along the soil carrying the bud to a distance from the mother plant where it gets fixed to the soil by means of adventitious roots and develops a new daughter plant.
Sucker Is an underground runner that forms a daughter plant after striking root. It can also develop from axillary buds at the runner's nodes. Plants arising from other underground parts, like roots of shrubs or trees, are also known as ________.
Offset This is found in aquatic plants and is similar to the runner, apart from it being shorter and thicker. Eg. Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and the Pistia (Pistia Stratiotes)-
