Anuria Formation and excretion of less than 100 mL of urine in 24 hours (1 day) = < 100 mL/day = Absence or abnormally very low of urine output (UO)
Bladder ultrasound (BUS) A noninvasive technology that can estimate the volume of urine in the bladder
Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) A urinary tract infection that can develop when an indwelling urinary catheter is in place greater than 2 days prior to the onset of infection
Cystectomy A urinary diversion procedure in which the bladder is surgically removed
Cystocele The protrusion (bulging) or herniation of the bladder into the vaginal canal
Detrusor muscle Smooth muscle of the urinary bladder
Diuresis Formation and excretion of large amounts of urine
Diuretic Medications administered to remove body fluid by increasing urine output (UO)
Dyuria Painful voiding
Enuresis Involuntary voiding with underlying pathophysiologic origin after the age that bladder control is usually achieved; nocturnal enuresis is bedwetting
Hematuria Presence of blood in urine
Hydronephrosis A condition where the kidneys become swollen , distended, and enlarged due to buildup of urine; occurs when the urinary tract becomes blocked, preventing urine from draining properly
Ileal conduit Type of urinary diversion; a surgical procedure that creates a new pathway for urine to drain from the kidneys to the outside of the body
Intermittent catheterization In-and-out catheterization performed on a routine, schedule basis for a particular patient; helps drain urine that can't be voided naturally
Micturition Urination
Nocturia Voiding during normal sleeping hours
Oliguria Formation and excretion of less than 500 mL of urine in 24 hours (1 day) = < 500 mL/day = Low urine output (UO)
Overactive bladder Frequency and urgency to urinate occurring together
Polyuria Formation and excretion of more than 2,500-3,000 mL in 24 hours (1 day) = > 2,500-3,000 mL/day (3 L) = Abnormally high urine output (UO)
Pyuria Presence of pus in urine
Urgency: The subjective feeling of needing to void immediately
Urinary incontinence Involuntary loss of urine from the bladder
Urinary retention Inability to empty the bladder of urine
