Biology CH-7 Vocab

TermDefinition
cell the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms.
Cell theory scientific theory stating that all living organisms are made of cells, the cell is the basic unit of life, and all cells arise from pre-existing cells
plasma membrane a special boundary that helps control what enters and leaves the cell.
organelles specialized structures that carry out specific cell functions.
Eukaryotic cells contain a nucleus and other organelles that are bound by membranes
nucleus a distinct central organelle that contains the cell’s genetic material in the form of DNA
Prokaryotic cells are defined as cells without a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles.
selective permeability by which a membrane allows some substances to pass through while keeping others out.
phospholipid bilayer in which two layers of phospholipids are arranged tail-to-tail,
transport proteins move needed substances or waste materials through the plasma membrane
fluid mosaic model describes the cell membrane as a dynamic structure made of a "mosaic" of lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates that are constantly moving
cytoplasm The environment inside the plasma membrane is a semifluid material
cytoskeleton a supporting network of long, thin protein fibers that form a framework for the cell and provide an anchor for the organelles inside the cells.
ribosomes The organelles that help manufacture proteins
nucleolus Within the nucleus is the site of ribosome production

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
