Standards: Variables, WED, chemical vs physical weathering, landforms

QuestionAnswer
What are independent variables in an experiment? The ONE thing that is changed.
What are dependent variables in an experiment? What you measure; the outcome of changing the independent variable.
What are controlled variables in an experiment? The things you keep constant; usually multiple in one experiment.
What is a dune? A large mound of a sand that can help protect inland towns.
What is a landform? A natural feature created by geological processes.
What is a mountain? A landform created by the converging of tectonic plates.
What is a coral reef? A landform consisting of coral created by polyps.
What is a coastline? The boundary in between the land and sea.
What is a barrier island? An island created by deposited sand.
What is replication? When another scientist follows the same procedures as a scientist who previously tested the same thing.
What is repetition? Multiple trials; testing the same thing multiple times for stronger evidence.
What is physical weathering? Breaking of rock caused by mechanical forces. (Ex: Wind, water, gravity)
What is abrasion? The scraping of rock against other rock by agents of weathering.
What is chemical weathering? The dissolution of rocks because of acids and chemicals.
What is a lake? A body of water surrounded by land that gives homes and living conditions for many animals.
What is a river? A landform that carries water in one direction.
