TermDefinition
Stomata The surface layers of the leaf have small openings, or pores, called stomata. The stomata open and close to control when gases enter and leave the leaf. When stomata are open, carbon dioxide enters the leaf and oxygen and water vapor exit.
Transpiration The process by which water is lost through a plant’s leaves.
Germination the sprouting of the embryo out of a seed; occurs when the embryo resumes its growth following dormancy.
Respiration The process in which cells use oxygen and digested food molecules to release the energy in food.
Flower The reproductive structure of an angiosperm.
Pollination The transfer of pollen from a male reproductive structures to female reproductive structures in plants.
List the 3 functions of roots. Roots anchora plant in the ground, absorb water and minerals from the soil, and sometimes store food.
List the 2 functions of stems. The stem carries substances between the plant’s roots and leaves. The stem also provides support for the plant and holds up the leaves so they are exposed to the sun.
Describe the basic function of leaves. Leaves capture the sun’s energy and carry out the food-making process of photosynthesis.
What is the difference between photosynthesis and cellular respiration Photosynthesis is using cellular respiration.
List the three ways a seed can dispersed. When animals eat fruit their digestive system are deposited in new areas, hooking onto fur or clothing, or by falling into oceans and rivers.
Label the basic parts of a flower(see diagram note sheet) A typical flower contains sepals, petals, stamens, and pistils.
Describe what each part of the flower does. Sepals-protect the developing flower Petals-colorful Stamens-male reproductive parts of a flower Pistils-consists of sticky stigma, a slender tube called style, and hollow structure called ovary at the base. Female reproductive parts of a flower
