| Luminosity | the actual brightness of an object such as a star |
| Apparent magnitude | the brightness of a star as seen from Earth |
| Hertzsprung-Russell diagram | a graph that shows the relationship between a star's surface temperature and absolute magnitude |
| Parallax | an apparent shift in the position of an object when viewed from different locations |
| Gravity | a force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses and that decreases as the distance between the objects increase |
| Mass | a measure of the amount of matter in an object |
| Sun | the star closest to Earth |
| Consellation | a region of the sky that contains a recognizable star pattern and that is used to describe the location of objects in space |
| Distance | the total length of the path taken between a starting point and end point |
