Intravenous Therapy

TermDefinition
The 3 main purposes of IV therapy Maintaining or providing daily body fluid and electrolytes because of inability to ingest fluids and nutrients by mouth
The 3 main purposes of IV therapy Replacing abnormal or excessive loss of fluids and electrolytes
The 3 main purposes of IV therapy Providing an avenue for IV administration of medications
IV push means the medication is injected directly into the vein using a needle and syringe
2 advantages of IV push an immediate therapeutic blood level and instantaneous effects of the drug
intermittent infusion device prn lock/saline lock
Precipitate forms when one of the agents in a solution separates from the solvent and becomes a solid, insoluble product. It may or may not be visible, look cloudy, hazy, or like fine floating crystals
Hypotonic solution lower osmolarity than body fluids, which simply means there is less solute dissolved in the water, making the concentration of the dissolved particles less than that of the body fluids
Isotonic solution fluid that contains an amount of solute that produces a concentration of dissolved particles equal to that of the intracellular and extracellular fluids of the human body.
Isotonic solution there will be no movement of fluids across the semipermeable membranes of the blood vessels or cellular membranes
Hypotonic solution will cause shifting of body fluids out of the intravascular space and into the interstitial spaces and then eventually into the intracellular spaces, rehydrating the cells
Hypotonic solution Out of the vessel, intO the cell
Hypotonic 1/2 NS 0.45% NaCl
Hypotonic 1/3 NS 0.33% NaCl
0.45% NaCl (1/2 NS) Water replacement, hypertonic dehydration
0.33% NaCl (1/3 NS) Free water replacement to aid kidneys in elimination of wastes
Isotonic D5W (5% Dextrose in water)
D5W Provide some calories for energy, provide free water
Isotonic NS 0.9% NaCl
0.9% NaCl NS the ONLY fluid used to initiate and discontinue blood transfusion, replacement of nutrients and electrolytes when no fluid shift is desired
Isotonic Lactated Ringer's (LR)
Lactated Ringers LR most similar to el4ectrolytes content of the blood so used for fluid replacement in all types of dehydration and fluid volume deficits
Hypertonic 5% Dextrose in 0.45% sodium chloride D5 1/2 NS
Hypertonic 5% Dextrose with 0.9% normal saline D5NS
Hypertonic 10% to 50% Dextrose D10W, D20W, D50W
Hypertonic 3% to 5% sodium chloride 3% NaCl, 5% NaCl

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
