Chapter 3 Plants

Lesson 1

TermDefinition
Chlorophyll A green photosynthetic pigment found in the chloroplast of plants, algae, and some other bacteria.
Tissue A group of a similar cells that perform a specific function.
Chloroplast An organelle in the cells of plants and some other organisms that captures energy from sunlight and changes it to an energy form that cells can use in making food.
Vacuole A sac-like organelle that stores water, food, and other materials.
Cuticle The waxy, waterproof layer that covers the leaves and stems of the most plant.
Vascular tissue The internal transporting tissue and some plants that is made up of tubelike structures that carry water, food, and materials.
Organelle A tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within the cell.
Chromatin Contain genetic material, the instructions for directing the cell’s function. For example, the instructions in the chromatin ensure that leaf cells grow and divide to form more leaf cells.
Mitochondrion Rod-shaped cell structure that convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions.
Endoplasmic reticulum A cell structure that forms a maze of passengeways in which proteins and other materials are carried from one part of the cell to another.
Lysosomes a small, round cell structure containing chemicals that break down large food particles into smaller ones.
Golgi body a structure in a cell that receives protein and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, packages them, and distributes them to other parts of the cell.
Describe the 3 main characteristics that all plants share. Nearly all plants are autotrophs, organisms that produce their own food. With the exception of some green algae, all plants contain many cells. In addition, all plant cells are surrounded by cell walls.
List the 2 things that a plant needs in the 2 things it makes during photosynthesis. a plant uses carbon dioxide gas and water to make food and oxygen.
What are 2 reasons why cell walls are important for plants. Contain cellulose, a material that makes the walls red. Because their cell walls are rigid, plant cells look like small boxes.
List the 5 things that a plant needs to survive on land. for plants to survive on land, they must have ways to obtain water and other nutrients from their surroundings, retain water, support their bodies, transport materials, and reproduce.
Label a plant cell diagram and why it’s different from an animal cell. one has a larger vacuole, one doesn’t have a cell walls (animal cell), and the other does(plant cells), one has chloroplasts(plant cell) and the other doesn’t(animal cell)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
