Chapter 3 Plants
Lesson 1
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chlorophyll | A green Photosynthetic pigment found in algae, plants and bacteria. |
| What are the 3 main characteristics that all plants share? | They are all autotrophs, multicellular, and have cell walls. |
| Photosynthesis | The process of which plants and other autotrophs capture and use energy to make food from carbon dioxide and water. |
| Tissue | A group of similar cells that perform a specific function. |
| Chloroplast | An organelle In the cells of plants and some other organisms that capture energy from the sun and change it into energy for food. |
| Vacuole | A sac-like organelle that stores water, food, and other materials. |
| Cuticle | The waxy, water-proof layer that covers the leaves and stems of most plants. |
| Vascular Tissue | The internal transporting tissue in some plants that is made up of tubelike structures that carry water, food, and minerals. |
| Organelle | A tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within a cell. |
| Chromatin | They contain genetic material, the instructions for the functions of the cell. |
| Mitochondrion | Rod-shaped cell structures that convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use for food to carry out the function. |
| Endoplasmic reticulum | A cell structure that forms a maze of passageway in which proteins and other materials are carried from one place to another not her part of the cell. |
| Lysosomes | A small, round cell structure containing chemicals that break down large food particles into smaller ones. |
| Golgi body | A structure in a cell that receives proteins and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, packages them, and distributes them to other parts of the cell. |
| 2 things a plant needs, and 2 things they make during photosynthesis. | They need water and other nutrients, and produce carbon dioxide and oxygen. |
| 2 reasons cell walls are important. | They are important because it surrounds the membrane and separates it from the environment. |
| 5 things a plant needs to survive on land. | Obtaining water and other nutrients, retaining water, support, transporting materials, and reproduction. |
| Why is a plant cell diagram different from an animals cell diagram? | They are different because the plant cell has a chloroplast which makes the plant green. |
