Marnie's Study Questions Cells

QuestionAnswer
What is the smallest unit of life? The cell
Describe cell theory. All living things are composed of cells. Cells are the functional and structural units of organisms. All cells are derived from previously existing cells.
Who invented the light microscope? Antonie van Leeuwenhoek
Who first observed cells in cork? Robert Hooke
Who proposed cell theory? Schleiden and Schwann
What is the size of most cells? Most are smaller than 1mm in diameter
What determines cell size? Surface/volume ratio.
Which has more surface area per volume, a small cell or a large cell? A small cell has more surface area per volume and a large cell has less surface area per volume.
Which type of cells have a membrane-bound nucleus? Eukaryotic cells.
Which part of the cell contains genetic material? The nucleus.
Are all plant and animal cells eukaryotic? Yes.
Where in the cell is the plasma membrane located? In the outer boundary of the cell.
List 1 function of the cell membrane? It functions as a barrier between the cell and its environment
List the 2nd function of the cell membrane Plays a role in regulation of transport of substances into and out of the cell
List the 3rd function of the cell membrane Contains receptors that determine how a cell will respond to stimuli in the environment
List the 4th function of the cell membrane Contains proteins that are important in immune responses
Describe the structure of the cell membrane It is a very dynamic, fluid structure.
A subcellular structure which performs specific life functions for the cell What is an organelle?
Where are many organelles found? In both animal and plant cells.
Some eukaryotic cells are found exclusively in plants or in animals. Plants-chloroplasts, central vacuole Animals-centrioles
Which part of the cell contains the genetic material DNA? The nucleus.
Where in the cell is protein assemblied? In the ribosomes.
List the 4 parts of the the Endomembrane system. Nuclear membrane, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and vesicles
What is the Rough Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) responsible for? The processing and modification of proteins.
What is the Smooth ER responsible for? It synthesizes phospholipids and has various other functions.
What is the Golgi Apparatus responsible for? It is the packaging and processing centre for cell products
