science quiz 1.1-1.3

Earths Interoir, Convertion currents and the mantle, Drifting Continets

QuestionAnswer
Geologists Scientists who study planet Earth
Geology The study of planet Earth
What are the two types of surface changes? 1. constructive forces 2. destructive forces
Describe Constructive forces. Constructive forces shape the surface by building up mountains and landmasses.
Describe Destructive forces. A force that slowly wears away features of the Earth's surface.
What kind of indirect evidence do geologists use to study the structure of Earth? They receive evidence from seismic waves. For example: When an earthquake occurs, geologists record the speed of the seismic waves to study how the waves travel through the Earth.
What are the effects of Temperature and Pressure as you travel through the layers of the Earth? Temperature: gets hotter when you dig further down (20 meters) Pressure(force pushing on a surface area): builds up when you go further down.
What are the 3 main layers that make up the Earth's interior? Crust, Mantle, and the Core.
Explain how Earth's magnetic field occurs. The current of the liquid in the outer core forces the inner core to spin. This movement creates Earth's magnetic field.
What is Heat Transfer? The movement of heat from a warmer object to a cooler object.
Describe Radiation. Radiation is the heat transfer through empty space. No direct contact.... example: someone tanning at the beach.
Describe Conduction. Conduction is the heat transfer when a hot object builds up with particles of matter. Example: someone puts their hand on a bowl of oatmeal.
Describe Convection. Convection is a heat transfer involving the movement of fluids, liquids, and gases. Example: a radiator... hot air rises
How is heat transfer by convection caused? The differences of temperature and density.
What is convection current? Convection Current is the flow that transfers heat within a fluid.
Who was the German scientist who formed a hypothesis that Earth's continents was once joined together?` Alfred Wegener
What does Pangaea mean? "all lands"
What is the continental drift? Wegener's idea that the continents which were once joined together slowly began to "drift" apart.
What types of evidence proved that the continents were once joined together? 1. Fossils 2. landforms 3. climate changes
What is a fossil? a fossil is any trace of an ancient organism that has been preserved in a rock.
Why was Alfred Wegener's theory rejected by most scientists of his day? Wegner could not give enough information to explain the force that pushed or pulled the continents apart.
