Assists With Bedpan

QuestionAnswer
First Step Addresses Client by name and introduces self to Client by name. Explains procedure clearly and thoroughly.
Second Step Privacy is provided by curtain, screen or door
Third Step Lower head of bed before putting on gloves
Fourth Step Puts on clean gloves before placing bedpan
Fifth Step Correctly places bedpan under buttocks
Sixth Step After placing bedpan, immediately remove and discard gloves without contaminating self. Wash hands after removing gloves.
Seventh Step After positioning Client AND removing gloves, raise head of bed
Eighth Step Provide Client with toilet paper and hand wipes. Instruct Client to clean hands with hand wipes when finished.
Nineth Step Signaling device is within reach and Client is asked to signal when finished. Provide privacy.
Tenth Step When Client signals they are finished, return, provide privacy, and put on gloves.
Eleventh Step Lower head of bed before removing bedpan
Twelfth Step Ensures Client is covered except when placing and removing bedpan
Thirteenth Step Empties and rinses bedpan and pours rinse into toilet
Fourteenth Step Places bedpan in designated dirty supplies area
Fifteenth Step Removes and disposes gloves without contaminating self. Wash hands after removing gloves.
Sixteenth Step Signaling device is within reach and bed is in lowest postion. Skill complete.
Notes Gloves on after privacy curtain. Gloves off after placing bedpan and before raising head of bed. Gloves on before lowering bed. Gloves off after washing bedpan.
