Homeostasis

QuestionAnswer
What is homeostasis? Homeostasis is the process by which the body keeps its internal environment stable, even when external conditions change. Examples include maintaining body temperature, blood sugar, and water balance.
What are the three main components of a homeostatic control system? Receptor – senses the change or stimulus. Control Center – analyzes the information and determines the response (usually the brain). Effector – carries out the response to correct the situation (muscle, gland).
What is negative feedback, and why is it important? Negative feedback reverses a change to keep conditions within normal limits. For example, when body temperature rises, sweating helps cool it down. It’s the main way homeostasis is maintained.
What is positive feedback, and how is it different from negative feedback? Positive feedback strengthens or amplifies a change instead of reversing it. For example, during childbirth, contractions increase until the baby is born. Unlike negative feedback, it moves the body away from balance temporarily.
