Latitude The distance north or south of the equator
Diurnal Active during the day and resting at night.
Dissolved oxygen The amount of oxygen gas present in water

Evolution The process by which species change over time through genetic variation and natural selection.
Tropic of Cancer The line of latitude about 23.5° north of the equator where the sun is directly overhead during the summer solstice.
Speciation The formation of new and distinct species through evolution.
Conductivity A measure of water’s ability to conduct electricity
Adaptation A trait or behavior that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its environment.
Aquatic Living or growing in water.
Tropic of Capricorn The line of latitude about 23.5° south of the equator where the sun is directly overhead during the winter solstice.
Average temperature The mean temperature of an area over a specific period of time.
Climate The long-term pattern of temperature
Nocturnal Active at night and resting during the day.
Biome A large region characterized by specific types of plants
Natural selection The process where individuals with traits better suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce.
Nitrates Chemical compounds containing nitrogen and oxygen that are essential for plant growth but can cause water pollution in excess.
Longitude The distance east or west of the prime meridian
Insolation The amount of solar radiation received by a given area over a period of time.
Terrestrial Living or growing on land.
pH A measure of how acidic or basic a substance is on a scale from 0 to 14.
