Cell Processes Vocab

TermDefinition
Photosynthesis A process where water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight are used to make food for plants.
Cellular respiration A process where glucose (sugar) and oxygen are used to make energy/ATP
ATP An energy molecule
Glucose A large sugar molecule that can move across the cell membrane and in and out of cells.
Carbon dioxide A gas that is made of 1 carbon (C) atom and 2 oxygen atoms. CO2. We breathe this gas out.
Oxygen A gas and element. The gas is what we breathe in.
Chloroplast A plant only organelle that does photosynthesis.
Mitochondria An organelle that does respiration. It takes in glucose and oxygen to make carbon dioxide, water, and ATP
Reactants Something that is put into a reaction. The “ingredients” of the reaction.
Products : Something that is made by a reaction.
Diffusion Conditions in which molecules of a substance are spread evenly throughout a space.
Active Transport Moving something across the cell membrane from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration. Energy is needed.
Passive Transport Moving something across the cell membrane, from an area of high to low concentration. No energy is needed.
Osmosis The movement of water across the cell membrane.
Atom The basic unit of a chemical element.
Element A chemical substance that cannot be broken down into other substances
Molecule a group of atoms bonded together that can take part in a chemical reaction
