Unit 1 Science

TermDefinition
Engineering The design of something to solve a problem using science
Criteria (Synonym for rules) The items needed for the design to be successful
Constraints Limitations to what you are allowed to do, use etc
Claim A statement that answers the question, is usually one sentence, and DOES NOT include any explanation, reasoning, or evidence so it should not include any transition words such as "because"
Evidence Data used to support the claim, it can be either quantitative (numbers) or qualitative (characteristics, qualities, or description) depending on the question and/or lab, and only use data with evidence that support the claim
Reasoning Explanation of "why and how" the evidence supports the claim and should include an explanation of the science concept that produced the evidence or data
Control/Fair Test/Controlled Experiment An experiment where ONLY ONE variable changes
Variable Something that can change
Independent variable A variable that can't be affected by other factors
Dependent variable A variable that can be affected by other factors
Constants Something that doesn't change
Accuracy How correct/precise it is
Hypothesis A prediction
Procedure Doing something
