State the three parts of the cell theory. 1. All living things are made of cells. 2. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in organisms. 3. All cells come from existing cells.
What is the structure and function of the cell membrane? The cell membrane encloses the cell, keeps the cell interior from its surroundings, and regulates what enters and leaves the cell.
How many cells on average are in a human? 100 trillion
Why are small cells more efficient than large cells? Because they have a higher surface area to volume ratio. Substances do not need to travel as far to reach the center of the cell.
Which number should be bigger in the surface area to volume ratio? The surface area.
What two characteristics are important when considering the quality of a microscope? Magnification and resolution
What are the two major categories of microscopes? What is the magnification of each? Light microscopes, 2,000 X magnification Electron microscopes, 200,000 X magnification
How do you calculate the total magnification of a light microscope? Multiply the objective lens magnification by the ocular lens magnification.
Describe the correct procedure for focusing a slide on low power. On high power.
What power are the three objectives on the microscopes used in class?
In what three ways are the specimen and its image under the microscope different?
Why should you never focus downward?
What changes in light do you notice when switching from low power to high power?
Label a diagram of the microscope.
Know the function of every organelle we discussed.
What cell structures/organelles are found only in plant cells? Animal cells? Only plants have the cell wall, chloroplasts, and a central vacuole. Only animal cells have
What's the difference between a scanning and a transmission electron microscope? Trans. elec. micro. shows internal details, the Scan. elec. micro. shows surface details and in 3-D.
Where in humans do we find cilia? Trachea, oviduct
Label the diagram of an animal cell.
Know macromolecule diagrams from the last test.
