| waterwheel | a large wheel driven by flowing water, used to power machinery |
| hydropower | the production of power through use of the gravitational force of water falling through a turbine |
| wind power | the transformation of the wind's kinetic energy into electrical energy using turbines |
| onshore | located on land, as opposed to in the water |
| offshore | located in the sea, away from the coast |
| generator | a machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy |
| repowering | upgrading or replacing older equipment (in this context, old wind turbines) with newer, more efficient equipment |
| renewable energy | energy from a source that is not depleted when used, such as hydro, wind, or solar power |
| nacelle | the enclosed space at the top of a wind turbine tower containing the generator and usually including the gearbox, if used |
