Force and Motion

TermDefinition
Control a factor that does not change in an investigation
Balanced Forces EQUAL forces do NOT result in motion
Energy the power or ability to make things happen
Force a push or pull that can change the position or motion of an object/material
Transfer when energy moves from one object to another through touch or collision
Unbalanced Forces UNEQUAL forces that result in motion

Friction a force that acts in an opposite direction to movement that touch
Gravity a force that pulls objects toward each other with mass
Hypothesis a well-researched prediction
Investigation a set of steps followed to answer a testable question
Magnetism a force that pushes or pulls a magnetic material across a distance
Mass the amount of matter in something
Motion when an object changes its position over time
Position the place where something is located in relation to other things
Variable a factor that changes in an investigation
Pull the act of applying force to move something toward or with you
Push the act of applying force in order to move something away
Reliable the extent to which an experiment, test, or investigation provides the same results on repeated trials
Valid true
Trial one single, repeated attempt in an experiment to test an idea
Testable Question a question that can be answered by conducting an experiment and collecting measurable, observable data
Independent Variable a variable that is changed by the scientist (what "I" am messing with or manipulating to see if it affects the outcome) CAUSE
Dependent Variable a variable that results from the change and can be MEASURED, OBSERVED or TESTED (DOES, DATA) EFFECT
Analysis the careful study of something to break it into its parts to understand it better
Increase to make or become bigger, more, or greater
Decrease to become smaller in size, number, or amount
Observation a description based on the five senses or measurements
