| Eclipse | When one celestial body moves into the shadow of another. |
| Solar Eclipse | When the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking sunlight from reaching Earth. |
| Lunar Eclipse | When the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, causing Earth’s shadow to fall on the Moon. |
| New Moon | The Moon phase during which solar eclipses can occur (Moon between Earth and Sun). |
| Full Moon | The Moon phase during which lunar eclipses can occur (Earth between Sun and Moon). |
| Umbra | The darkest part of a shadow where the light source is completely blocked. |
| Penumbra | The lighter, outer part of a shadow where the light is only partially blocked. |
| Partial Eclipse | When only part of the Sun or Moon is covered by the shadow. |
| Total Eclipse | When the entire Sun or Moon is covered by the shadow. |
| Annular Eclipse | A type of solar eclipse where the Moon is too far from Earth to completely cover the Sun, leaving a “ring of fire.” |
| Perigee | The Moon’s closest point to Earth during its elliptical orbit. |
| Apogee | The Moon’s furthest point from Earth during its elliptical orbit. |
| Orbit | The path an object takes as it moves around another object in space. |
| Alignment | When the Sun, Moon, and Earth line up, allowing an eclipse to occur. |
| Syzygy | A fancy term for when three celestial bodies line up in a straight line, as in an eclipse. |
| Path of Totality | The narrow path across Earth’s surface where a total solar eclipse is visible. |
| Corona | The outer atmosphere of the Sun, visible during a total solar eclipse. |
| Duration | The length of time the eclipse lasts at a given location. |
