Genetics
Fertilization a complex multi-step process that is complete in 24 hours
Purebred offspring resulting from a true breeding
Gene the basic physical and functional unit of heredity.
Allele one of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome.
Dominant allele only one copy of the dominant allele is required to express the trait.
Recessive allele does not produce a trait at all when only one copy is present
Hybrid an offspring of two animals or plants of different subspecies, breeds, varieties, species, or genera.
Punnett square is a square diagram that is used to predict the genotypes of a particular cross or breeding experiment.
Phenotype the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment.
Genotype the genetic constitution of an individual organism.
Homozygous having inherited the same versions (alleles) of a genomic marker from each biological parent.
Heterozygous A term that describes having two different versions of the same gene
Incomplete dominance a genetic phenomenon where one allele does not completely mask the effects of another when both are present in a heterozygous individual
Codominance a type of inheritance in which two versions (alleles) of the same gene are expressed separately to yield different traits in an individual.
Multiple alleles the presence of three or more alternative forms of a gene at a specific locus within a population
Polygenic inheritance occurs when one characteristic is controlled by two or more genes.
Messenger RNA A type of RNA found in cells.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
