3rd Soil Vocab

third grade soil vocabulary cards

QuestionAnswer
What is parent material? It is the solid rock and organic material that has not yet broken down into soil.
How does weather help make the soil? The changing temperatures (getting hot then cool) make rocks bigger and smaller eventually breaking them into smaller pieces.
What is a horizon? A layer in the soil.
What is a pore? What does it do? A hole in the soil. It allows water and air to get into the soil so plants and animals in the soil can live.
How do roots help soil? They keep the topsoil from blowing away. They also break up rocks to make new soil. They can drain water away from the soil when it's too dry or suck up water to keep the soil moist.
What is in the O horizon? Organic material that will decompose into humus.
What is in the A horizon? Lots of living organisms and roots.
What is a nutrient? Nutrients are natural chemicals that plants and animals need to stay healthy. Humus and decomposing organic material put nutrients into the soil.
