Matter
| Term | Definition |

| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Proton | A subatomic particle that has a POSTIVE charge |
| Neutron | A subatomic particle that has a NEUTRAL charge |
| Electron | A subatomic particle that has NEGATIVE charge |
| Atom | The basic building block of matter |
| Nucleus | The center part of an atom made up of protons and neutrons |
| Atomic Number | The number found on the periodic table that tells you the number of PROTONS and ELECTRONS (in a neutral atom) |
| Atomic Mass | The number on the periodic table that is equal to PROTONS PLUS NEUTRONS |
| Element | A pure substance made of only one kind of atom |
| Periodic Table | A chart that organizes all known elements into rows and columns based on their atomic number and chemical properties |
| Compound | A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements bonded together |
| Chemical Equation | A way to describe a chemical reaction using chemical formulas and other symbols (+ and ->) |
| Reactant | The part of a chemical equation that is present at the START of a chemical reaction (on the lefthand side of the arrow) |
| Product | The part of a chemical equation that is present at the END of a chemical reaction (on the righthand side of the arrow) |
| Molecule | Two or more atoms bonded together |
| Coefficient | The number in front of a chemical formula that tells you how many molecules there are present |
| Subscript | The small number found after a chemical symbol that tells you how many atoms of that element there are present |
| Chemical Symbol | A one or two letter abbreviation of an element name. The first letter is always capitalized and the second letter (if present) is lowercase. |
| Electron Cloud | The space surrounding the nucleus where electrons are found |
