Matter

TermDefinition
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Proton A subatomic particle that has a POSTIVE charge
Neutron A subatomic particle that has a NEUTRAL charge
Electron A subatomic particle that has NEGATIVE charge
Atom The basic building block of matter
Nucleus The center part of an atom made up of protons and neutrons
Atomic Number The number found on the periodic table that tells you the number of PROTONS and ELECTRONS (in a neutral atom)
Atomic Mass The number on the periodic table that is equal to PROTONS PLUS NEUTRONS
Element A pure substance made of only one kind of atom
Periodic Table A chart that organizes all known elements into rows and columns based on their atomic number and chemical properties
Compound A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements bonded together
Chemical Equation A way to describe a chemical reaction using chemical formulas and other symbols (+ and ->)
Reactant The part of a chemical equation that is present at the START of a chemical reaction (on the lefthand side of the arrow)
Product The part of a chemical equation that is present at the END of a chemical reaction (on the righthand side of the arrow)
Molecule Two or more atoms bonded together
Coefficient The number in front of a chemical formula that tells you how many molecules there are present
Subscript The small number found after a chemical symbol that tells you how many atoms of that element there are present
Chemical Symbol A one or two letter abbreviation of an element name. The first letter is always capitalized and the second letter (if present) is lowercase.
Electron Cloud The space surrounding the nucleus where electrons are found
