| Nails | Protects the ends of the finger and toes from injury, helps pick up small objects, and grip the floor when we walk. |
| nail body | portion of the nail that is visible, pink due to blood flowing through underlying capillaries |
| Free Edge | part that may extend past the distal end of the digit, white due to no underlying capillaries |
| Nail root | portion that is buried in a fold of skin. |
| Lunula | whitish semilunar area of the proximal end of the nail body. While due to the thickening of the stratum basale in that area. |
| Eponychium | Skin over the nail root, at the proximal border of the nail and consists of stratum corneum. |
