Grammar Assessment 7

Content from Chapter 7: Choosing Nominals

TermDefinition
Anticipatory "it" The use of the pronoun "it" in subject position that puts the noun clause or verb phrase subject in the predicate position: Pleading with him is no use--> "it's" no use pleading with him.
Appositive A structure, usually a noun phrase, that describes or further identifies a nominal structure, usually another noun phrase: My neighbor, "a butcher at Weis Market," recently lost his job.
Complex sentence A sentence that includes a dependent clause.
Dangling gerund A phrase or an elliptical clause with a verb form placed so that it has no clear relationship with its subject; you can fix this by either changing the subject or by expanding the prepositional phrase into an adverbial clause.
Dependent clause A clause that functions as an adverbial, adjectival, or nominal (in contrast to an independent clause.)
Gerund An --ing verb functioning as a nominal: I enjoy "jogging." "Running" is good exercise.
Infinitive The base form of the verb, usually expressed with "to," which is called "the infinitive marker."
Interrogative The same words we use for questions/ in question form, like who, what, when, where, why, how, or auxiliary verbs such as do, is, and are.
Nominal Any structure that functions as a noun phrase normally functions--as subject, direct object, indirect object, object complement, subject complement, object of preposition, appositive.
Nominal clause A dependent clause that functions as a noun phrase normally functions.
Nominalizer The process of producing a noun by adding derivational affixes to another word class: legalize--legalization; friendly--friendliness. Often a sentence will be more effective when the verb is allowed to function as a verb rather than being turned to a noun
Sentence appositive A noun phrase at the end of the sentence that sums up the idea of the main clause: The teacher cancelled class on the Friday before spring break, "a decision that was greeted with unanimous enthusiasm."
Nominalizer in chapter context The nominal clause starting with "that" can function as a nominalizer.
