epidermis Made up of stratified squamous epithelium (tissue)
Stratum corneum Outer layer of epidermis
Stratum corneum 20-50 layers of flattened dead cells, with protein keratin
Stratum corneum Constantly worn away or shed off (3 to 4 weeks).
Stratum lucidum 3 to 4 rows of flattened, dead cells
Stratum lucidum Found only in the skin of the palms of the hands and soles of the feet

Stratum spinosum Multiple layers of cuboidal cells
Stratum spinosum Dark nuclei= pyknosis early sign of cell death
stratum basale Single layer of columnar cells, only layer capable of mitosis
Stratum basale Cells constantly dividing and multiplying, moving outward on 27 day cycle
Stratum basale Other layers could not exist without this layer.
Keratinization Cells in the basal layers have keratin (protein) added as they are pushed to the surface.
Keratinization At the same time in the cytoplasm, nucleus, and other organelles disappear, and the cells die.
Keratinization The process takes 2-4 weeks
Keratinization Why? Keratinization of cells makes them tough and waterproof.
Melanocytes are cells that produce melanin
melanin The amount of determines your skin color, all the people have about the same number of melanocytes.
