Lesson 2 Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Producers | Make their food from materials in their environment. An example would be plants. |
| Consumers | Do not produce their own food. They get the energy they need to survive by consuming other organisms. |
| Energy | The power to make things move, work, or change. |
| Detritivores (also called decomposers) | Get their energy from eating the remains of organisms. An example would be a mushroom. |
| Food chain | A simple model that shows how energy moves from the sun, to a producer, to one or more consumers through feeding relationships. |
| Model | A simple, hands-on representations to understand things in the real world that are too big, too small, or too complicated to see. An example would be a globe. |
| Food web | Shows how food chains in a community are interconnected or related |
| Energy pyramid | Also called trophic levels. Shows how the amount of energy in an ecosystem changes |
| Ecosystem | A neighborhood where plants, animals, and even tiny germs live and work together with non-living things like water, air, and rocks. |
