Gr. 6 Q2 Sequence 3
What are the Surface Events that result in changes to the Earth’s System?
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Igneous Rock | Rock Made from the cooling of magma |
| Sedimentary Rock | Rock made from the compacting and cementation of small rock particles (sediment) |
| Metamorphic Rock | Rock made from heat and pressure deep within Earth |
| Scientific Models | A representation or a description designed to make a part/feature of the world easier to understand. |
| Sub Surface events | Events in the rock cycle that are driven by energy from the Core |
| Plate Tectonics | Large pieces of earth's crist that move and interact creating landforms on Earth's surface |
| Weathering | The breaking of rock |
| Erosion | The movement of rock or rock particles from one location to another |
| Deposition | Rock or rock particles |
| Scientific Experiment | An investigation that requires manipulating and controlling variables |
| Repetition | A scientist completing multiple trials within an experiment |
| Replication | A scientist repeating the work of another scientist to verify the accuracy of the data. |
| Compaction and cementation | The process of layers of sediment being pressed together over time and forming new rock |
| Agents of Weathering | Water, Wind, Gravity, Ice, Animals, Plants, and Temperature |
| Frost Wedging | The process of water trapped within cracks in a rock freezes, expands, and breaks the rock |
| Controlled Experiment | A scientific test done under regulared conditions in which just one of the factors are changed at a time while others are kept constant. |
| Independent (Input)Variable | The variable that is changed or manipulated on purpose |
| Dependent (Output) Variable | The variable that is changed as a result of the independent variable. This is the data from the experiment. |
| Control Group | An item or group that does NOT receive the independent (input) variable |
| Controlled Variables | Items that are kept the same in an experiment. |
| Physical Weathering | Weathering that occurs due to the action of matter or a force |
| Chemical Weathering | Weathering that occurs due to chemical reactions with rock. |
