| tension | the pulling force at a divergent boundary |
| shear | parallel forces acting in opposite directions at a transform boundary |
| strain | a change in the shape of a rock caused by stress |
| ocean trench | deep, underwater trough create by one plate subducting under another plate at a convergent plate boundary |
| volcanic arc | a curved line of volcanoes that forms parallel to a plate boundary |
| transform fault | fault that forms where tectonic plates slide horizontally past each other |
| fault zone | an area of many fractured pieces of crust along a large fault |
| folded mountain | mountain made of layers of rock that are folded |
| fault-block mountain | parallel ridge that forms where blocks of crust move up or down along faults |
| plains | landform with low relief and low elevation |
| basin | area of subsidence; region with low elevation |
| plateau | an area with low relief and high elevation |
