Science in Biology

TermDefinition
Scientific Literacy basic understanding of science and its processes; plus reasoning and thinking skills
Ethics a set of morals principles and values
Theory a well tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations and hypotheses, and enables scientists to make accurate predictions about new situations.
quantitative observations observations that involve numbers and measurements
qualitative observations observations that involve using your senses (touch, taste, sight, hearing, smelling)
inference educated guess based on what you know and what you learn
hypothesis a testable explanation for a set of observations, a question or a problem. Must be written as an If, then statement.
independent variable variable that is purposefully changed by the scientist in an experiment
dependent variable variable that is measured as a result of the change made by the independent variable
experimental group group in an experiment that receives the independent variable
control group group in an experiment that the results are compared to; nothing has been tested on this group
constants/controls all the things that stay the same in an experiment
graph independent variable goes on the x-axis and dependent variable goes on the y-axis
data information gathered during an experiment
peer review sharing information with other scientists for verification of credibility of work
unbiased not allowing your personal feelings or beliefs to get in the way of your work
