What is Science?

TermDefinition
inference an educated guess based on clues, observations, and information you have.
system A way of looking at how different parts work together as a whole. A group of pieces or subsystems that work together to achieve a goal.
sequence A pattern or process where one thing follows another.
analyze Separate something into parts for close study, looking at something carefully to better understand and explain it.
model A simplified picture or a mini version of something very complex or complicated in the world.
sub-system A smaller system that is part of a larger system. (the sound system helps to make a video game function in a computer so you can hear it)
input Information or data you put into something.
process A series of actions or steps taken to achieve a specific result or goal.
output The amount of something produced by a person, machine, industry. The result of input.
investigate To carefully examine or search into something to find out the truth about it or how it happened or how it works.
data Facts, figures, pieces of information, like numbers, sounds, pictures that help us to learn about something.
evidence Collection of facts or information that explain why something is true or false, right or wrong. It helps us understand the reasons for things happening or how they work.
science A means of improving our knowledge and understanding of the universe based on the collection of observation-based evidence.
phenomena An observable event or something that can be seen. Any event we can sense or detect, like a rainbow or a thunderstorm.
criteria Things you look for when you judge something and make a decision.
observation When you look, listen, touch, taste, or smell to learn more about an object, phenomenon or the world around you.
