Water Cycle
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| water cycle | The continuous movement of water between Earth’s surface and the atmosphere. |
| evaporation | When liquid water changes into water vapor due to heat. |
| condensation | When water vapor cools and changes back into liquid droplets. |
| precipitation | Water that falls from the atmosphere to Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. |
| transpiration | The process where plants release water vapor from their leaves. |
| infiltration | When water soaks into the ground through soil and rock. |
| runoff | Water that flows over the surface of the land into rivers, lakes, and oceans. |
| collection | When water gathers in oceans, lakes, rivers, or other bodies of water. |
| groundwater | Water stored underground in soil or rock layers. |
| water vapor | The gas form of water found in the atmosphere. |
| Sun | The main energy source that drives the water cycle. |
| clouds | Collections of tiny water droplets or ice crystals in the atmosphere. |
| atmosphere | The layer of gases surrounding Earth where water vapor and clouds are found. |
| freshwater | Water with little salt that is found in rivers, lakes, glaciers, and groundwater. |
| saltwater | Water that contains dissolved salts, mainly found in oceans. |
| reservoir | A place where water is stored, such as lakes, glaciers, or groundwater. |
| sublimation | When ice or snow changes directly into water vapor without melting first. |
| cycle | A repeated pattern of events, such as water continuously moving on Earth. |
| crystallization | The formation of solid ice crystals from water vapor or droplets |
| gravity | Defines movement, causing precipitation to fall from clouds, water to flow downhill as surface runoff, and groundwater to move underground towards lower elevations |
