Water Cycle

TermDefinition
water cycle The continuous movement of water between Earth’s surface and the atmosphere.
evaporation When liquid water changes into water vapor due to heat.
condensation When water vapor cools and changes back into liquid droplets.
precipitation Water that falls from the atmosphere to Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
transpiration The process where plants release water vapor from their leaves.
infiltration When water soaks into the ground through soil and rock.
runoff Water that flows over the surface of the land into rivers, lakes, and oceans.
collection When water gathers in oceans, lakes, rivers, or other bodies of water.
groundwater Water stored underground in soil or rock layers.
water vapor The gas form of water found in the atmosphere.
Sun The main energy source that drives the water cycle.
clouds Collections of tiny water droplets or ice crystals in the atmosphere.
atmosphere The layer of gases surrounding Earth where water vapor and clouds are found.
freshwater Water with little salt that is found in rivers, lakes, glaciers, and groundwater.
saltwater Water that contains dissolved salts, mainly found in oceans.
reservoir A place where water is stored, such as lakes, glaciers, or groundwater.
sublimation When ice or snow changes directly into water vapor without melting first.
cycle A repeated pattern of events, such as water continuously moving on Earth.
crystallization The formation of solid ice crystals from water vapor or droplets
