Weathering
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Physical Weathering (Mechanical Weathering) | Rocks are broken down into smaller pieces but the composition of the rocks remain the same |
| Chemical Weathering | Chemical reactions break down the bonds that hold rocks together, forming new substances |
| Erosion | Processes by which wind, water, ice or gravity transport weathered materials from one location to another ("Takes It") |
| Weathering | The breaking down of rocks and other materials on the Earth's surface by physical or chemical processes ("Breaks It") |
| Deposition | Process in which sediment is laid down in new locations ("Drops It") |
| Physical Change | A change in matter that does NOT cause a change in the substance or create any new matter |
| Chemical Change | A change in matter that produces one or more new substances |
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Evidence of Chemical Changes | New smell, Unexpected Color Change, Creation of Light, Creation of Heat, New Matter Created |
| Examples of Physical Weathering | Freezing/Thawing, Animal Actions, Plant Roots, Running Water, Wind Abrasion, Changes in Heat |
| Examples of Chemical Weathering | Reactions with Oxygen (Rust); Acid Rain; Reaction with materials creating new substances |
| Sediment | Crushed rock and rubble formed when weathering occurs |
