Intro to Bio Vocab

TermDefinition
Cell A basic unit of living matter separated from its environment by a plasma membrane; the fundamental structural unit of life.
Organism An individual living thing, consisting of one or more cells
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) stranded helical nucleic acid molecule consisting of nucleotide monomers with deoxyribose sugar and nitrogenous bases (Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine, and Thymine) capable of replicating, an organism’s genetic material
Ecosystem All the organisms in a given area, along with the nonliving (abiotic) factors with which they interact; a biological community and its physical environment
Systems Biology An approach to studying biology that aims to model the dynamic behavior of whole biological systems based on a study of the interactions among the system’s parts
Hypothesis A testable explanation for a set of observations based on the available data
Consumers(heterotroph) an organism that obtains organic food molecules by eating other organisms or substances derived from them
Eukaryotic cell a type of cell that has a membrane-enclosed nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles. All organisms except bacteria and archaea are composed of this.
Species a group of populations whose members have the potential to interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring.
Natural selection a process in which individuals with certain inherited traits are more likely to survive and reproduce than are individuals that do not have those traits.
Independent Variable a factor whose value is manipulated or changed during an experiment to reveal possible effects on other factors.
Organ A specialized structure composed of several different types of tissues that together perform specific functions
Prokaryotic Cell A type of cell lacking a membrane-enclosed nucleus and other membrane-enclosed organelles; found only in the domains Bacteria and Archaea
Energy the capacity to cause change, especially to perform work
Evolution Descent with modification; the idea that living species are descendants of ancestral species that were different from present-day ones; also, the genetic changes in a population from generation to generation
Dependent Variable a factor whose value is measured in an experiment to see whether it is influenced by changes in another factor (the independent variable)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
