Protein Large molecules composed of one or more chains of amino acids in a specific order. Provides structure, control chemical reactions & builds bone and muscle. CHON
Amino Acid The monomers of proteins. These organic compounds contain amino and carboxyl groups, along with a side chain.
Carbohydrate Compounds of carbon, hydrogen & oxygen. Carbohydrates come in simple forms such as sugars and in complex forms such as starches. Primary source of energy. CHO
Monosaccharide simple sugars, are the monomers of carbohydrates. Appear as a single 5 or 6 carbon ring.
Polysaccharide Long-chain carbohydrates made up of smaller carbohydrates called monosaccharides
where are Polysaccharide found? in cell walls
Fatty Acid The monomers of lipids. Organic compounds that consists of a chain of carbon atoms with an acidic carboxyl group at one end.
Lipid An organic compound that is made up mostly of hydrocarbon chains and cannot dissolve in water (like oils & fatty acids). Long term storage of energy. CHO
What is an example of a lipid phospholipid
Nucleotide The building blocks of nucleic acids; they are composed of 3 molecules
Nucleic Acid Single- or double- stranded chain of nucleotides joined by sugar-phosphate bonds; CHONP
What is an example of Nucleic acid DNA or RNA
Polypeptide Long chain of amino acids linked together with covalent bonds
Monomer smallest subunit, bind to other monomers to form a polymer.
Polymers a large molecule, or type of macromolecule, composed of many repeated monomers.
Elements A pure substance, made up only of one kind of atoms. C - Carbon H - Hydrogen O - Oxygen N - Nitrogen P - Phosphorus
Organic Molecule A kind of molecule normally found in living systems; are usually composed of carbon atoms in rings or long chains.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
