Bio Unit 3

vocab for test

TermDefinition
Cell basic unit of all forms of life
Cell Membrane thin, flexible barrier that surrounds all cells; regulates what enters and leaves the cell
Cell Theory fundamental concept of biology that states that all living things are the basic unit of structure and function in living things; states that new cells are produced from existing cells
Cell Wall strong, supporting layer around the cell membrane in some cells
Centriole structure in an animal cell that helps to organize cell division
Chloroplast organelle found in cells of plants and some other organisms that captures the energy from sunlight and converts it into chemical energy
Cytoplasm in eukaryotic cells, all cellular contents outside the nucleus; in prokaryotic cells, all of the cells contents
Cytoskeleton network of protein filaments in a eukaryotic cell that gives the cell its shape and internal organization and is involved in movement
Endoplasmic Reticulum (Smooth/Rough) internal membrane system found in eukaryotic cells; place where lipid components of the cell or cell membrane are assembled; rough er is covered in ribosomes while smooth er is not
Eukaryote organism whose cells contain a nucleus; more complex
Lipid Bilayer flexible double layered sheet that makes up the cell membrane and forms a barrier between the cell membrane and forms a barrier between the cell and its surroundings
Lysosome cell organelle that breaks down lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins into small molecules that can be used by the rest of the cell
Prokaryote unicellular organism that lacks a nucleus; simple cell
Ribosomes cell organelle consisting of RNA and protein found throughout the cytoplasm in a cell the site of protein synthesis
Selectively Permeable property of biological membranes that allows some substances to pass across it while others cannot; also called semipermeable membrane
Organelle specialized structure that performs important cellular functions within a cell
Mitochondrion cell organelle that converts the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use; powerhouse of the cell; converts energy stored in glucose in to ATP for the cell
Golgi Apparatus/Body organelle in cells that modifies, sports, and packages proteins and other materials from the endoplasmic reticulum for storage in the cell or release outside the cell
Vacuole cell organelle that stores materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates
Nucleus structure that contained the cell genetics material in the form of DNA
Nucleolus the very center of the nucleus

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
