Classifying Matter

atom the basic particle of any element
chemical bond the force of attraction between two atoms

chemical formula shows the elements and ratios of atoms in a compound
compound a substance made of two or more elements chemical combined in a set ratio
mixture two or more substances in the same place but not chemically combined
matter anything that has mass and takes up space
chemistry the study of matter and how it changes
substance a single kind of matter that is pure, meaning it has a specific composition
physical property a characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into a different substance
chemical property a characteristic of a substance that describes its ability to change into different substances
distillation separating liquids by boiling them - the liquid with the lower boiling point will vaporize first, leaving the other liquid behind
homogeneous mixture it is difficult or impossible to see the different parts
heterogeneous mixture the different parts can be seen easily
CO2 Carbon dioxide
evaporation separate dissolved or suspended substances from water
magnetic attraction holding a magnet near a mixture to pull out anything that is attracted to the magnet
solution liquid example of a homogenous mixture like sat water
filtration a substance is passed through some kind of filter that allows fine particles, such as water, to pass through while filtering out larger particles
