Classifying Matter

| atom | the basic particle of any element |
| chemical bond | the force of attraction between two atoms |
| molecule | a group of two or more atoms held together by a chemical bond |
| element | substances made up of only one type of atom |
| chemical formula | shows the elements and ratios of atoms in a compound |
| compound | a substance made of two or more elements chemical combined in a set ratio |
| mixture | two or more substances in the same place but not chemically combined |
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| chemistry | the study of matter and how it changes |
| substance | a single kind of matter that is pure, meaning it has a specific composition |
| physical property | a characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into a different substance |
| chemical property | a characteristic of a substance that describes its ability to change into different substances |
| distillation | separating liquids by boiling them - the liquid with the lower boiling point will vaporize first, leaving the other liquid behind |
| homogeneous mixture | it is difficult or impossible to see the different parts |
| heterogeneous mixture | the different parts can be seen easily |
| CO2 | Carbon dioxide |
| evaporation | separate dissolved or suspended substances from water |
| magnetic attraction | holding a magnet near a mixture to pull out anything that is attracted to the magnet |
| solution | liquid example of a homogenous mixture like sat water |
| filtration | a substance is passed through some kind of filter that allows fine particles, such as water, to pass through while filtering out larger particles |
